This weather is a lot more work for you, Mary, because you don't normally get it. So you aren't set up for it at all.
Since we are used to it, we have tank heaters and a frost-free faucet for filling the stock tanks, even a heated base under the chicken waterer. Weather forecasting is certainly a boon for us, as we knew on Tuesday that we were expecting a lot of wind and some snow on Wednesday evening, so we put out a new round bale on Wed morning, even though they hadn't quite eaten all of the previous one. The "leftovers" were moved inside sheds for deeper bedding and into feed racks inside so they could nibble out of the cold.
Where it hits me hardest is in the work it takes to get dressed to do chores. I wear long underwear under a pair of insulated pants, then three layers of long-sleeved shirts/sweatshirts on top, with a vest over that and a heavier coat over all. A head band over my ears, then a hood that Velcro's around my throat and the hood of a sweatshirt pulled over that. Then thermal gloves under work gloves.
It's cold outside, but I need to be able to take off a couple of layers in order to milk or I would just wear a big, heavy coat and be done with it.
Gearing up like that twice a day is exhausting. Taking care of the animals is nothing in comparison!
